In episode 220, Dan suggested that government spending is getting so overwrought that, eventually, military spending will have to be cut because the people demand it because such high military spending lowers their quality of life.

And I have to disagree with that, at least to a certain extent. And it is because of what conservatives say on the issue.

Conservatives will say that the military and foreign affairs are the only two major reasons for the federal government existing according to the U.S. Constitution. Also, the United States is best when operating as a free market economic system because that's what God says in the Bible.

Therefore, any cuts to be had on government spending must first be totally on all non-military spending first. Once that's gutted, then military spending can be addressed.

Combine this with the kickbacks Congressmen and Senators get from the defense industry, and I'm still quite doubtful of any real long-term reform taking place to address these issues to get pragmatic changes done.

They are about to cut the health care of service members. As I said...everything will be cut before the MIC gets the big cuts handed to them.

The plan is in place to reduce health benefits for the military.

Quote:
The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched.

Significantly, the plan calls for increases between 30 percent to 78 percent in Tricare annual premiums for the first year. After that, the plan will impose five-year increases ranging from 94 percent to 345 percent—more than 3 times current levels.

The massive increases beginning next year appear timed to avoid upsetting military voters in a presidential election year, critics of the plan say.

Additionally, the critics said leaving civilian workers’ benefits unchanged while hitting the military reflect the administration’s effort to court labor unions, as government unions are the only segment of organized labor that has increased in recent years.

This biggest issue I have with this is the lack of fairness. Federal Defense employees, most of which will never face a deployment or mandated overtime will retain their benefits while the grunts will pay greater rates. Many of the service members are going to require life long treatment for damage to their health directly related to their service.

The military, and those politicians that support it the most, won't give up the budget without a fight.
